Design Thinking: Calypso Studios
In Graduate School, one of the buzzwords professors love to discuss is "Design Thinking." Design Thinking is an iterative process in which we seek to understand the user, challenge assumptions, and redefine problems to identify alternative strategies and solutions that might not be instantly apparent with our initial level of understanding (Dam and Siang). Design Thinking enables companies to understand consumer needs to serve their audience better. For this project, I contacted different companies to learn how organizations applied Design Thinking. I spoke with Calypso Studios to learn how the company incorporates its mission and vision into its products.
1. What makes Calypso Studios different from other jewelry companies?
We include our customers in every step of the production process, base our jewelry on historical trends, and ask our customers their thoughts and opinions about which pieces they love and how they would like to customize them. Based on their feedback, we designed and priced the piece as affordably as possible.
2. Where does the Calypso Studios team find inspiration when designing your products?
We are inspired by history, art, nature, literature, mythology, and more.
3. How does Calypso Studio incorporate its mission and vision into its products?
Our designs are inspired by vintage, antique, and ancient jewelry! We always consider our customers' wants and preferences during the selection process.

4. What advice would you give to students and young professionals who want to enter this industry?
Find a niche and stay consistent with it! Understand your customers' needs while maintaining your store policies.
5. What is the future of the company?
Eventually, we’d like to expand into apparel (offering both vintage and our designs) and maybe even open a physical location!
