Originally designed to equip alpine hunters in mountain areas, the Béret Alpin Bulle, thanks to its large diameter, allowed protection from the cold and bad weather by folding it down on one side of the face. This year, we wanted to pay tribute to men and women involved, the Beret Alpin Bulle is named after Jean Bulle former alpine hunter and resistant during the Second World War." In Graduate School, one of the buzzwords professors love to discuss is "Design Thinking." Design Thinking is an iterative process in which we seek to understand the user, challenge assumptions, and redefine problems to identify alternative strategies and solutions that might not be instantly apparent with our initial level of understanding (Dam and Siang). Design Thinking enables a company to understand consumer needs to serve their audience better. For this project, I contacted different companies to learn how the organizations apply Design Thinking into their market offerings. I had the opportunity to talk with Boutique Laulhère Paris to learn more about the mission and vision of the company.

1. What makes Laulhère different from other brands?

First at all Laulhère is the last historic beret factory in France. Since its creation in 1840, Laulhère has

been the guardian of the technique and the method of making a quality beret. These processes had

to evolve while keeping ancestral know-how. The crossing of stitches, the art of knitting has been

industrialized as closely as possible to the gestures transmitted by beret experts. Maison Laulhère

has been able to modernize itself while keeping the knowledge and manufacturing methods handed

down from generation to generation.

The factory is based at the foot of the Pyrenees and there has never been any question of relocation.

Indeed, small hands are trained in Oloron-Sainte-Marie and noble materials are sourced locally. All

these points have elevated Laulhère to the rank of French Living Heritage Company (EPV).

The manufacturing secrets and the quality of the beret make it possible to recognize at first glance a

Maison Laulhère beret. The resistance and modernity characteristic of our berets has allowed the

beret, initially a functional accessory, to pass through the generations, becoming a popular fashion

icon from Oloron-Sainte-Marie to Tokyo, via Paris and New York.

2. How does Laulhère stay ahead of upcoming trends?

The design teams are constantly on the lookout for new ideas and new techniques to enhance the

beret. The beret is an inexhaustible support for creation that opens the field of possibilities to

innovative ideas. This year again the press and fashion houses keep asking us. The beret more than a hat is an emblematic figure of nonconformity. After almost 2 years in a particular context, the beret is a

symbol of freedom and is therefore more relevant than ever.

3 . How does Laulhère incorporate its mission and vision into its product offerings?

Laulhère's mission is to perpetuate and transmit an iconic emblem of French fashion and French

heritage while conveying a modern image of the beret in accordance with the challenges of making.

The product offering is constantly being renewed without breaking with its DNA. For example, the

2021 collections were marked by innovations such as natural dyeing, summer beret materials and

New weaving techniques while remaining close to its heritage. Badges or product names are perfect

examples that show that no matter how creative and innovative the berets are, they always keep

Laulhère’s authenticity and commitment.

very involved in societal challenges with local employment, and environmental challenges with new
